British Palomino Society (BPS)
(Full Member)
The British Palomino Society is we believe the oldest colour society in the UK having been created in 1959 from the amalgamation of the Palomino Horse Breeders Association and the British Horse and Pony Society. Its Predecessor the Palomino Horse Breeders Association was incepted in April 1955 by a group of enthusiasts who were finding that their palomino and cream horses were being discriminated against in showing classes. These founding members also wanted to promote the breeding, and development of the perfect golden horse.
Golden Horses have been popular since the beginning of records with many famous palominos over the years including Bubbly who was ridden by the young Jennie Loriston Clarke. From the 1980s the Society took over the Cremello Register upon the demise of the British Cremello Society, and from early 2000’s we expanded to include all other cream dilutions with the introduction of mandatory DNA testing for the cream gene for our Cream Dilute Register. We are passport Issuing Organisation and have a DEFRA approved Studbook in the same way as CHAPS.
The cream dilution gene affects both red and black pigment and is responsible for 'diluting' the carrying horse to lighter coat shades and colours. In many breeds this is often considered a highly desirable trait. Cream dilution is the gene responsible for palominos, buckskins, cremellos and many more.
Horses which carry one copy of the cream gene are identified as single dilutes; they are heterozygous for the cream dilution gene. In the simplest case, a bay horse with a single copy of cream is known as a buckskin, a single dilute black horse is known as a smoky black and a single dilute chestnut or sorrel horse is known as a palomino. Single dilute horses have a 50% chance on passing the cream gene on to its offspring.
Horses which carry two copies of the cream gene are referred to as double dilutes; they are homozygous for the cream dilution gene. A bay horse with two copies of cream is known as a perlino. A black horse with two copies of cream is known as a smoky cream and a chestnut or sorrel horse that carries two copies of cream is known as a cremello. A double dilute horse will always pass on a copy of the cream gene to its foals.
Our Society is supported by many M&M breeders and owners in hand and under saddle and we attract the partbreds especially Arabians, we have also have a lot of support from in hand exhibitors of all breeds and types from Shetlands to cobs and would be delighted to be considered for the Price in hand supreme. We have also asked to be considered for the M&M ridden and partbreds as this is where our support is across the board under saddle.
This year just at The Royal Welsh Show the in hand over 4 year old and over section attracted over 23 entries of Palomino and dilute ponies of different types and breeds and we as a Society are very grateful to these shows that enable people to come together and showcase these wonderful animals, plus raise awareness of our long standing Society and its long heritage.
We would be offering if we are successful the qualifier at our National Championship Show in Malvern which is over the weekend from 11th – 13th July. This 2 day show is open to members only, we have on our panel of judges HOYS standard judges not only representing our Society but also on WPCS,CHAPS,TSR,AHS, NPS etc, so our judge will be more than knowledgeable to select a top quality exhibit to go through to HOYS.
We hope that you will consider us as your support would be gratefully received if we could offer a qualifier at our Championships. These old historic societies need all the support and publicity they can get.
As I stated the Palomino Society is long standing and we also incorporate other cream dilutes with many of our members exhibits being successful in HOYS which I'm sure you already know. We, like all other societies want to offer these prestigious qualifiers and as a colour society very much like CHAPS we are open to all breeds and types that are genetically tested for the palomino and cream dilute gene. Our exhibits are not only beautifully bred but they have a metallic golden gleam to their coat which looks amazing under the lights at HOYS as can be seen with the palominos that have had great success in the Welsh classes.
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to assist you.
