The Showing Council Meeting - 11th June 2025

20th June 2025
Here are some bullet points from the recent Council meeting:
The Showing Council was delighted to welcome 22 attendees to the AGM and Council Meetings held on 11th June at Equestrian House, Kenilworth by kind permission of the BHS. Being an in person gathering, it gave a great opportunity for us to hear some important presentations and other points of interest:
-
Governance - Lynne Bailey, BEF Company Secretary and Head of Integrity, outlined TSC’s obligations as an Associate Member of the BEF. TSC is bound by the BEF Integrity Framework and this requirement will be reflected in our own upcoming Agreement with our MBs. The BEF’s longstanding Rule Book has recently been updated to ensure compliance with the Code for Sports Governance and to emphasise a strong “one Federation” approach, e.g. consistent messaging and adherence to ‘Best Practice’ particularly for Equine Welfare, Safeguarding and Sustainability. Lynne also drew attention to the importance of Safeguarding Policies and for all Policies to include ‘Adults at Risk’ as well as Children.
-
TSC Judges & Officials Group Personal Accident Insurance - Liz Inman, the Showing Council Chair, reported that the Group Accident Policy is now in place with nine Member Bodies having taken up the cover, all individually stated within the Policy. Any Member Body not presently covered under this policy can elect to join at any time over the coming year and pay a pro rata premium.
-
Riding Safety and Visibility – Alan Hiscox, BHS Director of Safety, shared the shocking statistics of horse related road accidents across the UK. He outlined how the BHS align with several safety organisations, working to create a safer environment for riders and horses. The importance of reporting ALL incidents or close-shave incidents was stressed regardless of severity, either via the BHS website reporting hub or the BHS horse i app. Statistics can then be collated and hot spots throughout the country identified. In turn this information is shared with police and other safety bodies in the locality. BHS also lobby the Government for change in safety legislation.
-
Unified Show Rules - David Ingle and Julie Templeton gave an update on the progress of the working group and were delighted to announce the collaboration and support of The Horse Trust and Liverpool University to bring research and evidence into the conversations and decisions made to guide on best practice and welfare, horse and human, in and out of the show ring.
